Lightwell were also behind the design of the virtual studio used by ITV Sport for their coverage of the UEFA Women’s World Cup 2025. This follows our ongoing collaboration with BBC Sport, for whom we also designed the virtual studio used for the same tournament.

The ITV set was developed in early 2023 with versatility at its core. ITV wanted a studio that could serve not just this tournament, but also be adapted for future sports coverage across a range of disciplines—from football and rugby to motorsport. Our task was to create a dynamic, multi-purpose environment that offered both visual impact and editorial flexibility.

Built using Unreal Engine, the studio combines high-fidelity virtual graphics with a real-time workflow. It allows ITV’s production team to update graphic treatments, branding, and lighting colour schemes to suit different events and broadcast moods. This level of adaptability means the studio can quickly shift tone—celebrating national teams with custom colours one day, and delivering neutral highlights the next.

We designed multiple zones within the space to support a range of storytelling needs, from tactical analysis to live data displays. Camera tracking and mixed reality integration were also carefully considered to ensure seamless interaction between the presenters and their environment.

The result is a smart, modern studio that supports ITV’s editorial ambitions and gives their broadcasts a distinctive visual identity. Its success during the Women’s World Cup highlights how virtual production can go beyond being a technical solution—it can become a creative platform.
