BBC Sport’s UEFA Women’s Euros 2025 Studio: A Virtual Set with a View

View of the virtual set created by Lightwell for BBC Sports coverage of the UEFA Womens Euros 2025. Gaby Logan sits in the presenters chair, across the desk from 3 guests. The space in which they sit is virtual, but creted to look like a modern, timber pavilion. Through the windows, we can see Lake Lucerne and mountains. This swiss landscape is also virtual.

I’ve just added the virtual set we created for the BBC’s coverage of the UEFA Womens Euros 2025 tournament, to the Lightwell website. You can read about the project here:

BBC Womens Euros Virtual Set Design

This design was built in Unreal Engine 5.4 and is powered by Viz 5. It is broadcast from the BBC’s in-house greenscreen studio in Media City, Salford.

The virtual set was designed as a moren, timber pavilion. This view is from outside the pavilion building, looking past the glass and timber construction to the view of Lake Lucerne and the distant Swiss mountains. Everything shown here is virtual.

The project has already appeared in two publications, which can be accessed here:

TVB Europe – How the BBC’s Women’s Euro 2025 studio reflects the Swiss landscape

SVG – UEFA Women’s Euro 2025: Sunset+Vine goes remote, accentuates sustainability, and makes use of a virtual set for BBC Sport coverage

The virtual set was designed as a moren, timber pavilion. This view is from in front of the timber pavilion, close to the timber deck that was used for opening shot sequences that would be pre-recorded. As well as the pavilion, the lake, mountains and landscape are entirely virtual, and prepared using Unrel Engine 5.4

I’m planning to follow this up with more behind the scenes coverage, but first I need to prep a talk I’m giving for Viz…

Here we see the entirety of the real, physical elements in the BBC greenscreen studio. The desk, mat and chairs are real - the presenters are also real, but in testing we use the poseable foam mennequins seen here. Everything else is greenscreen, and will be replaced by the virtual set.
